Banjul Entry Requirements

Banjul Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Banjul, The Gambia's pocket-sized capital, is planted on an island where the Gambia River collides with the Atlantic. Passengers step from the plane onto tarmac licked by sea breeze and the low diesel breath of the port. Inside, immigration halls ring with Wolof greetings and the percussion of stamps on passports. Officers in starched khaki fire questions while ceiling fans stir the thick air. The drill is simple but tight: fill an entry card, press fingers to a glowing glass scanner, and accept a faintly sweet ink stamp that carries the whiff of ethanol and ocean. Queues dissolve fast when the midday flights land. Arrive after dark and you may loiter under flickering tubes while mosquitoes whine through open doors. Before departure, check your passport has six months' validity left and keep proof of onward travel, airline staff in Dakar or Casablanca will demand it. The terminal, freshly repainted in sunshine yellow and green, shelters one lonely carousel. Bags thud down while porters in neon vests shout for business. Outside, a mango tree shades the walk to the taxi rank where battered Mercedes idle and drivers call prices in English, Wolof, and French. Touchdown to curb takes 30, 45 minutes if your papers are in order.

Arrival Process

Banjul International Airport's single-terminal arrival flow is straightforward but can turn hot and crowded when several flights coincide.

1
Disembarkation & Health Check
Cross the tarmac into the terminal. Show your yellow-fever card to white-coated staff who spritz disinfectant smelling of chlorine.
2
Immigration Control
Queue under the sign matching your visa type. Hand over passport, entry card, and printed eVisa approval if required. Officers scan fingerprints and snap a digital photo.
3
Baggage Claim
Cases slide onto the lone belt while a crackly loudspeaker mangles announcements. Porters hover, offering help for small change.
4
Customs Inspection
Choose the green channel if you have nothing to declare. Red if you carry restricted goods. Bags may be X-rayed while you stand on a rubber mat that squeaks underfoot.
5
Exit to Arrivals Hall
The final exit door swings open to humid air laced with diesel from waiting taxis. Hotel reps wave laminated signs beneath a corrugated roof.
